Asian Handicap, BTTS and Corners: Football Markets Beyond Match Winner
The 1X2 is easy to tap. It is not always the market that matches the match.
A lot of new tickets die on match winner because the favourite is short and the underdog still has a path to a draw. I keep three other markets on the desk: Asian Handicap, both teams to score, and corners. Each one answers a different question.
I will not reprint a weekend price as if it were still live. Open Sports and read the board you have. This page is about how I choose the market.
Handicap betting
A handicap gives one side a goal start on the ticket. You use it when one team is a lot stronger on paper and the raw winner is too short to be interesting. The underdog gets a cushion. The favourite has to win by more than the line.
Asian Handicap versus European Handicap
European handicap keeps the three-way shape: win, draw, lose after the goal bump. Asian handicap splits the line and can refund a half. I use Asian when I want the draw pushed off the ticket. I use European when I still want a draw as its own box.
A whole-goal Asian line can push. A half-goal line cannot. A quarter line splits the stake. If you do not want to think about a split stake, stay on a half line.
- Favourite too short on 1X2: look at the favourite to cover.
- Underdog with a low block: look at the plus line.
- I skip handicap when I cannot say the margin in one sentence.
Both teams to score
BTTS is yes or no on both teams scoring at least once. The final 1X2 does not matter. You can be right in the 12th minute if both boxes have already gone. You can also sit through 80 minutes of a 1-0 and lose the ticket.
When I open BTTS
I open it when both attacks are live and both defences leak. I close it when a low block is the whole plan, or when a cup tie is set up to stay tight. Head-to-head and missing strikers matter more here than a league table.
- Recent goals for and against, not just wins.
- Who is missing in the last third.
- Weather and a poor pitch can kill a yes.
- A must-not-lose night can kill a yes even if both sides can score in April.
Corner betting
Corners track set-piece volume. A team that lives on wide service will load the corner total even if the 1X2 is ugly. I treat it as a separate book, not a side bet I add for colour.
How I read a corner night
I look at who attacks wide, who sits deep, and whether the wingers are inverted. Two inverted wingers against a high line can starve the flag. A direct winger against a packed box can flood it. Weather that kills passing can also create more cut-offs and more flags.
